PROGRAMMING SPECIALIST JOB DESCRIPTION

ADEL PUBLIC LIBRARY

Position: Programming Specialist

Accountable to: Programming and Community Outreach Librarian

Summary: Under the general direction of the Programming and Community Outreach Librarian, the Programming Specialist provides library programming to patrons of all ages and develops and implements all marketing and promotions of the library.

Programming: Essential Duties and Responsibilities

➢ Schedules, plans, and conducts library activities and programs for patrons of all ages, including presenter scheduling and booking.

➢ Supports the on-going program of special events for patrons, such as the summer reading program, winter family reading program, and after school activities.

➢ Provides information to staff and patrons relating to library programs, events, and presenters.

➢ Supports outreach efforts as needed.

➢ Records and maintains programming statistics.

➢ Assists parents and other adults select appropriate children’s materials.

➢ Assists children and teens working on school assignments: Helps them find and use the research materials in the library’s collection and on the website.

➢ Organizes and give tours of the library and its services to all patrons.

Marketing: Essential Duties and Responsibilities

➢ Manages all marketing and publicity for the library including, but not limited to, news releases, posters, flyers, and e-newsletters.

➢ Creates publicity for all library events, programming, and services.

➢ Develops and maintains all content on the library website and social media accounts, including marketing and promotion of all library events, programs, and services.

➢ Develops and maintains library bulletin boards and physical and digital displays, and special exhibits.

Additional Duties:

➢ Participates in professional library organizations; attends meetings and workshops to retain/obtain the appropriate endorsement through the State Library of Iowa.

➢ Performs all job responsibilities of a Library Clerk as needed.

➢ Assists with the maintenance of library collections, including selection, inventory, and weeding of library materials.

➢ Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements:

Knowledge: The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of library principles, organizations, operations, procedures, reference materials, and books. Knowledge regarding children and young adult literature is a plus. Knowledge regarding current library programming, services, and activities for patrons of all ages, especially children and young adults is essential.

Skills and Abilities: This position requires experience working with Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, and Canva. The ideal candidate will have experience with marketing tools, including social media, and familiarity with marketing design software and website development and management. It is essential that candidates are flexible, creative, and have the ability to establish a good rapport with patrons of all ages. Candidates will have the ability to perform a variety of duties without supervision, to communicate orally and in writing, to follow written and verbal instructions, the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and supervisors.

Physical Demands: Physical activity includes bending, reaching, setting up chairs and tables, and also sitting at a computer. Lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs., with 20 lbs. maximum, if necessary.

Education and Experience: The above knowledge, skills and abilities are a combination of education and experience in library operations, with a bachelor’s degree in Education, Library Sciences, Social Work, English or similar fields. A bachelor’s degree is required and candidates with an MLIS are preferred. A strong interest in reading, community, children of all ages, and libraries is mandatory.
