Adel’s Got Talent!

We know it’s true. The Adel Public Library will host “Open Mic Night” on Friday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the library community room. This is the last adult program in the 2009-10 season and it should be a fun one.

Adults are asked to sing, play an instrument, recite poetry, do stand-up comedy, skits, etc. Share your talent and encourage others to do the same. There is a limit of 3 pieces of work per person. We need an audience, too! Sign up is necessary only if you are performing.

For more information call Lynne at 993-3512 or sign up at the front desk. There will also be refreshments and door prizes. This is a free program.

The Friends of the Library will have their annual meeting on Thursday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the library community room. On the agenda will be election of officers and making plans for the upcoming year. All members and those wishing to join are welcome.

• Scrapbooking, Friday, May 7 at 6 p.m. Bring a snack to share.
• Brown Bag Book Club, Tuesday, May 25 at noon
• Evening Book Club, Thursday, May 27 at 7 p.m.

Kids and Teen Events:

• Preschool Story Time and Toddler Time will end for the Spring during the week of May 3 and will start up again during the week of June 14.
• Early Out Movie, Wednesday, May 12 at 1:30 p.m. Title TBA
• Teen Craft, Monday, May 17 at 4 p.m.

The library’s Second Garage Sale of the season will be held on Friday, May 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 29 from 10 a.m. to noon. Proceeds will be used to purchase new craft tables and chairs for the children’s craft room.

The library staff is preparing for the Summer Reading Program entitled “Make a Splash – Read!” Sign up begins Wednesday, June 9 and a special event will be held on that day. At 1 p.m. balloon artist Daniel Poe will present “Dive Into Reading.”

Also coming in June: The Fourth Annual Iowa Book Festival on Saturday, June 19. Two of the featured speakers will be Mary Swander, Iowa’s Poet Laureate, and Dan Wardell, host of the IPTV KIDS Clubhouse.

Due to budget cutbacks, we are asking patrons if they would like to donate their magazine subscriptions to the library. Call Paula for more information about this project. The library staff also appreciates donations of books, DVD’s, and music CD’s to add to the library’s collection.

May 23 will be the last Sunday that the library will be open due to budget cutbacks. We apologize for any inconvenience this may bring to patrons who enjoyed coming to the library on Sunday afternoons. Library hours will be cut further beginning July 1.

The library will be closed on Monday, May 31 for Memorial Day.

Spring Break in the ADM School District is the week of March 14 and the Adel Public Library has several events planned for children and teens during that time.

Kid’s events:

• On Monday, March 15 from 2-4 p.m. teens are invited to the library community room for Teen Gaming which will include Nintendo Wii and board games. Students grades 6-12 are invited to participate.
• A movie for all kids (title to be announced) will be shown on Tuesday, March 16 beginning at 2 p.m. School age children may drop in anytime between 2 and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17 to make a St. Patrick’s Day craft.
• Pre-School activities will continue during March:
• Pre-School Story Time for ages 3-5 on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.
• Toddler Time for ages 3 and under on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.

JoAnn Bray will give a workshop, “Building Bluebird Houses,” on Tuesday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the library community room.

JoAnn will provide everything needed to build a birdhouse for just $5 each.

• Scrapbooking – Friday, March 5 at 6 p.m. Bring a snack to share. New members always welcome.
• Evening Book Club – Thursday, March 25 at 7 p.m. in the library board room.
• Brown Bag Book Club – Tuesday, March 30 at noon in the library board room. Bring lunch if you wish. Book titles TBA. Copies of the books will be available at the front desk and new members are always welcome.
• “Snow is Falling, Books are Calling” – Winter Reading Program for adults will end on Friday, March 19 with a drawing for a gift basket which will include a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card. Weekly drawings are held for a single prize. Just read a book, fill out the special form, and drop it into our big jar. A listing of all winners will be in the April newsletter.
• Exercise – Join us and get healthy during our 9 a.m. two-mile walk exercise class which is held three mornings a week in the library community room. No fee. No getting down on the floor. It’s easy and fun! Pick up a schedule at the front desk. Days vary from week to week. The exercise class held on Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m. has been cancelled.

The library is now accepting good and resalable items for our upcoming garage sales held in the unfinished portion of the library. Sales will begin on the last Friday and Saturday of April. Funds raised will go towards the purchase of tables and chairs for the children’s craft room.

Library hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Sunday 1-4 p.m.
