<p>Of special interest are the following: U of I homecoming program dated 11/6/37 with Nile Kinnick&#8217;s picture and a U of I homecoming button dated 10/21/50.</p>
<p>Other items up for bid include: glass water pitcher, handmade mittens, handmade quilt (size queen/king), several exceptional framed art pieces, knitted &amp; crocheted items (baby hats, afghans), quilted table runner and wall hangings, hand made apron, 10 blue Fenton plates, Rhett Butler &amp; Scarlet O&#8217;Hara plates, stamps and guide for stamp collecting, signed copy of &#8220;A Thousand Acres&#8221; by Jane Smiley, leather graduation photo album (MHS 1924) with pictures, scrapbook with travel memorabilia circa 1940, photo album of early Colorado photos, 20 12 &amp; 15 cent Disney comics, 10 glass water goblets, Boyd&#8217;s Bear jacket (X-L), perfumery science kit, potpourri set, Webkinz, handpainted pitcher by Grace McConeghy, first edition of Ernest Hemingway&#8217;s &#8220;A Farewell to Arms,&#8221; illustrations by Harrison Cady from a child&#8217;s book, and a boxed copy of &#8220;Candide&#8221; by Voltaire.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s how the auction works.  Place your bids in the special book provided.  Check back often to see if you have been outbid.  Phone bids will be accepted until noon on Sept. 10.  Good luck!</p>
<p>Minimum bids will be placed on some items.  Proceeds from the sale will go toward library projects.</p>
<p>Preschool Story Time and Toddler Time begin again the week of Sept. 12.  Preschoolers ages 3-5 may come either Monday or Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and toddlers ages 3 and under are invited on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.  Activities include stories, songs, games and crafts.</p>
<p>Stop by the craft room to see the new tables and chairs that preschoolers will be using beginning this month.  The new items were purchased by the Friends of the Library.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-784" title="Checking-Out-Books" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Checking-Out-Books.jpg" alt="" width="161" height="153" />And what would we do without our Friends of the Library?  Recent purchases by the Friends include children&#8217;s programming (Blank Park Zoo &amp; balloon programs), membership into a mobile laptop consortium lab, laminating rolls for laminating machine, Humanities Iowa program sponsorship, and gift cards for children and adults programs.  T-shirts with the slogan &#8220;We Treasure Our Friends&#8221; are now available for $8 plus tax. If you would like to purchase a shirt, call the library at 993-3512 and ask for Lynne.</p>

<p>The <strong>2010-11 Adult Program Series @ Your Library</strong> begins Wednesday, Sept. 22 with Coffee and Current Events from 10 to 11 a.m.  This will be a monthly event that will be held on the fourth Wednesday of each month from September through May.  Come and share your ideas on world and community events in a lively discussion group.  Refreshments will be served.</p>
<p>Are you interested in bird watching?  Tom Lawson who is an expert on this topic will guide us at the Voas Nature Area at Minburn on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 8 to 10 a.m.  We will meet at the library at 7:15 a.m. to carpool to the site.  This program was offered two years ago and those who went had a great time &#8211; and we had great weather!  Please sign up at the library or call 993-3512.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Wow!  Is it really August already?</strong> Even though Summer may be winding down, the Adel Public Library still has some great activities for children this month.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-764" title="Lego-Builder2" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Lego-Builder2.jpg" alt="" width="163" height="109" /><strong><em>Our Annual</em></strong> <strong><em>Lego Building Contest</em></strong> is set for <strong>Tuesday, Aug. 10 from 10-11 a.m.</strong> No doubt there will be fierce competition as boys and girls build their masterpieces.</p>
<p>Prizes will be given in various categories.  Children may bring their own legos or use the library&#8217;s legos.  No registration is required.</p>
<p><img class="size-full wp-image-754 alignright" title="Tea-Party" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Tea-Party.png" alt="" width="163" height="109" />Later that afternoon, children and caregivers are invited to the <strong><em>Annual American Girl Tea Party</em></strong> to be held in the library community room.</p>
<p>This will be a dress-up occasion, boys and girls, so put on your best and come enjoy a craft, fancy foods and other fun.</p>
<p>Children are asked to bring their American Girl Doll or their favorite doll or stuffed animal.<strong> Please register at the front desk (adults as well as children) by Friday, Aug. 6 or call 993-3512.</strong></p>

<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-767" title="Carrying-Books" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Carrying-Books1.png" alt="" width="162" height="204" />It&#8217;s almost here!  <strong><em>The Annual Friends of the Library Used Book Sale</em></strong> will be held on <strong>Sweet Corn Days Saturday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.</strong> in the <strong>library community room</strong>.</p>
<p>Area residents have been generously donating books all year so you just might find that special book you&#8217;ve been looking for.</p>
<p>If you are a Friends of the Library member, you may shop during Friends Day on Friday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Anyone who is not a member may join that day for $5.</p>
<p>Proceeds from the sale will help fund the 2011 Summer Reading Program for children.</p>
<p><br class="spacer_" /></p>
<p>Kids are invited to a <strong><em>&#8220;Hunger Games&#8221;</em></strong> party on <strong>Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 4 p.m.</strong> The event is based on the popular teen series by <em>Suzanne Collins</em>.  The final book in her Hunger Games series, <em>&#8220;Mocking Jay,&#8221;</em> will be released that day and a copy of the book will be given away in a drawing during the party.</p>
<p><br class="spacer_" /></p>
<p>One <strong><em>Preschool Story Time</em></strong> will be held during August.  <strong><em>The Dallas County Conservation office</em></strong> will come on <strong>Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 10:30 a.m.</strong> to engage children in activities with a <em>Native American theme</em>.</p>

<p><strong>Back by popular demand is our special Silent Auction.</strong> Bidding begins <strong>Monday, Aug. 31 at 10 a.m. and ends Friday, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m.</strong> So far we have some great items up for bids:</p>

<p>The Friends of the Adel Public Library will meet on Thursday, July 8 at 6:30 p.m. to make plans for the Annual Friends of the Library Used Book Sale.  This year&#8217;s sale will be held on August 13 and 14 during Sweet Corn Days.  More information will be in the August newsletter.</p>
<p><a href="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Garage-Sale.gif"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-684" title="Garage-Sale" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Garage-Sale-150x76.gif" alt="" width="150" height="76" /></a>Thanks to all who have so generously given items to our monthly garage sales.  Our next sale will be Friday, July 30 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, July 31 from 10 a.m. to noon.  Proceeds will benefit the children&#8217;s area and other needs.  We hope to have a bake sale at the same time.  If you don&#8217;t have items to donate, please consider giving baked goods.  They are very popular!  It&#8217;s a great time to try out those new recipes.</p>
<p>Due to budget cuts, the library will no longer purchase DVD&#8217;s, but we will take donations.  Movies we do not have and are not rated R will be placed in the library system upon approval.  Others will be saved for our sales.  Library magazine subscriptions are also being cut.  If you would like to donate your subscriptions, please call 993-3512 for more information.</p>
<p>Also due to budget cuts, library hours have been cut beginning July 1.  Our new hours will be Mondays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and closed on Sundays.  We regret any inconvenience these changes may cause our patrons.</p>

Children may stop by that day or any day after to register and receive a free book bag containing this summer&#8217;s calendar and reading guidelines.  All events are free.</p>
<p>The program kicks off with <strong>&#8220;Dive Into Reading&#8221;</strong> a Creations with a Twist Story Time Stage Show&#8221; on Wednesday, June 9 at 1 p.m. in the library community room.  Balloon artist Daniel Poe will share some &#8220;fishy&#8221; tales with the help of the audience.  Favorite children&#8217;s stories are brought to life on stage &#8211; highlighting the talents and the creativity of volunteers from the audience.</p>
<p><strong>The reading program features the following categories.</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Buccaneers &#8211; Preschool age.  Parents or caregivers read aloud to children to earn treasure.</li>
<li>Pirates &#8211; School age.  Children grades K-5 read to earn pirate coins and get treasures.</li>
<li>Teens &#8211; grades 6-12.  Teens read, volunteer, and attend programs to earn raffle tickets for books and prizes.</li>
<li>Family &#8211; The whole family can participate in Duck, Duck, Read! &#8211; a special challenge just for families.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Weekly activities include:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Geronimo Stilton Book Club (ages 5-12) Tuesdays at 2 p.m.  Read the book out loud, talk about the book, and enjoy Geronimo Stilton activities and games.</li>
<li>Preschool Story Time (ages 3-5) Mondays and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.  Pick one day.  Children will enjoy stories, sing along songs and crafts.</li>
<li>Toddler Time (ages 3 and under) Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.</li>
<li>Drop In Crafts (ages 5-12) Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. while supplies last.</li>
<li>Pirate Club (ages 5-12) A different activity each Wednesday at 2 p.m.</li>
<li>Picnic in the Park (everyone) Bring your lunch and enjoy games and activities at Evan&#8217;s Park at noon on the 2nd Thursday of June and July</li>
<li>Family Movies (everyone) Catch a free movie on our big screen.  Every Friday at 2 p.m.  Each movie has a water theme.  Can you guess what movies we have picked?</li>

<p><strong>The 4th Annual Iowa Book Festival</strong> will be held at the Adel Public Library, City Hall and the surrounding outdoor grounds on <strong>Saturday, June 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.</strong></p>
<p>This year&#8217;s festival is bigger and better than ever and features many Iowa authors: <strong><em>Chuck Larson <span style="font-weight: normal;">&#8220;Heroes Among Us&#8221;,</span> Carson &amp; Connie Ode <span style="font-weight: normal;">&#8220;Iowa Spaces, Places, Faces,</span>&#8221; Carol Bodensteiner <span style="font-weight: normal;">&#8220;Growing Up Country,</span>&#8221; John Bruner <span style="font-weight: normal;">&#8220;Me &amp; Soup,</span>&#8221; Shirley Damsgaard, <span style="font-weight: normal;">&#8220;Ophelia and Abby&#8221; series</span>, <span style="font-weight: normal;">and</span> Lisa Broadie Cook <span style="font-weight: normal;">&#8220;Martin MacGregor&#8217;s Snowman.&#8221;</span></em></strong></p>
<p>Special guests will be <strong><em>Mary Swander, Iowa&#8217;s Poet Laureate</em></strong>, and <strong><em>Dan Wardell, host of the IPTV KIDS Clubhouse</em></strong>.</p>
<p>There will also be a <strong>Kids Build-a-Book Workshop</strong> and an <strong>IPTV Resources for Parents Workshop</strong>.  The workshop is an early literacy initiative to help children learn early reading skills through PBS KIDS broadcast programs.  Other activities for kids include marble art and tattoo art.  Kids will receive free Cyclone and Hawkeye balloons.</p>
<p><strong>All Iowa Book Festival events are free and open to the public.  There will also be numerous vendors selling books and food.  Please come to our family friendly event and enjoy the activities for all ages through the love of books and reading.</strong></p>

<p>New items are added almost daily so you never know what you might find.  Baked goods will be accepted the day of or the day before the sale.  Proceeds will be used to purchase additional tables and chairs in the craft room.  A free will donation is all it takes to buy your treasures.  Baked goods will be priced.</p>

<p>Adults are asked to sing, play an instrument, recite poetry, do stand-up comedy, skits, etc.  Share your talent and encourage others to do the same.  There is a limit of 3 pieces of work per person.  We need an audience, too!  Sign up is necessary only if you are performing.</p>
<p>For more information call Lynne at <strong>993-3512</strong> or sign up at the front desk.  There will also be refreshments and door prizes.  This is a free program.</p>
<p><em><strong>The Friends of the Library</strong></em> will have their annual meeting on<strong> Thursday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m.</strong> in the library community room.  On the agenda will be election of officers and making plans for the upcoming year.  All members and those wishing to join are welcome.</p>

<p>The library staff is preparing for the <strong>Summer Reading Program</strong> entitled <em><strong>&#8220;Make a Splash &#8211; Read!&#8221;</strong></em> Sign up begins Wednesday, June 9 and a special event will be held on that day.  At 1 p.m. balloon artist <strong>Daniel Poe </strong>will present <strong><em>&#8220;Dive Into Reading.&#8221;</em></strong></p>

<p><strong>Due to budget cutbacks,</strong> we are asking patrons if they would like to donate their magazine subscriptions to the library.  Call Paula for more information about this project.  The library staff also appreciates donations of books, DVD&#8217;s, and music CD&#8217;s to add to the library&#8217;s collection.</p>
<p><strong>May 23</strong> will be the last Sunday that the library will be open due to budget cutbacks.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may bring to patrons who enjoyed coming to the library on Sunday afternoons.  Library hours will be cut further beginning July 1.</p>
<p>The library will be closed on Monday, May 31 for Memorial Day.</p>

<p><strong>Kid&#8217;s events:</strong></p>

<p>JoAnn will provide everything needed to build a birdhouse for just $5 each.</p>

<li><strong>&#8220;Snow is Falling, Books are Calling&#8221;</strong> &#8211; Winter Reading Program for adults will end on Friday, March 19 with a drawing for a gift basket which will include a $50 Barnes &amp; Noble gift card.  Weekly drawings are held for a single prize.  Just read a book, fill out the special form, and drop it into our big jar.  A listing of all winners will be in the April newsletter.</li>
<li><strong>Exercise</strong> &#8211; Join us and get healthy during our 9 a.m. two-mile walk exercise class which is held three mornings a week in the library community room.  No fee.  No getting down on the floor.  It&#8217;s easy and fun!  Pick up a schedule at the front desk.  Days vary from week to week.  The exercise class held on Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m. has been cancelled.</li>
</ul>

Sales will begin on the last Friday and Saturday of April.  Funds raised will go towards the purchase of tables and chairs for the children&#8217;s craft room.</p>
