<p>The <strong>Brown Bag Book Club </strong>will meet<strong> Thursday, Feb. 9</strong> at <strong>noon</strong> to discuss <strong><em>&#8220;Two Old Women&#8221; by Velma Wallis</em></strong>.  Copies of the books for both clubs are available at the front desk.  New members are always welcome.</p>

<p>The <strong>Evening Book Club</strong> will discuss<em><strong> &#8220;Strength in What Remains&#8221; </strong>by<strong> Tracy Kidder</strong></em> at its <strong>Feb. 23 meeting at 7 p.m.</strong> Kidder is a Pulitzer Prize winner and this novel has been chosen by the <em>Iowa Center for the Book</em> as the <em>2012 All Iowa Reads</em> selection.</p>

<p><strong>Preschool Story Time (Mondays)</strong> and <strong>Toddler Time (Tuesdays)</strong> are up and running again.</p>
<p>Both sessions begin at <strong>10:30 a.m.  Preschool Music Time</strong> will be held through February on <strong>Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. </strong></p>
<p><strong>Preschool Story Time will not be held on Monday, Feb. 20</strong> since the library will be closed for <strong>Presidents&#8217; Day</strong>.  Music Time will replace Toddler Time on Feb. 21.</p>

<p>The <strong>Grand Finale for the Family Reading Program</strong> is set for <strong>Thursday, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m.</strong> This will be a family movie night so everyone can enjoy a movie on our big screen.  Winners of the reading program will be announced and prizes will be awarded for the grand finale raffle.  Light snacks will be provided.</p>

<p><strong>Teens</strong> will meet at the library at <strong>4 p.m. </strong>on<strong> Tuesday, Feb. 14</strong> to make <strong>Hersey Kiss flowers</strong>.</p>

<p><strong>Reservations for the Annual Soup Luncheon and Program</strong> must be in by <strong>Thursday, Jan. 19.</strong></p>
<p>The event, part of a series of adult programming for 2011-2012, will be held on <strong>Saturday, Jan. 21</strong> in the library community room.</p>
<p>The luncheon begins at <strong>12 noon</strong> and the program <strong>&#8220;Bonnie and Clyde&#8221; </strong>will follow at approximately <strong>1 p.m.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Rod Stanley, <em>assistant at the Perry Museum</em></strong>, will give the program.</p>
<p>A free will donation for the luncheon will be accepted with proceeds used to fund future adult programs.</p>
<p>Make your reservations by calling 993-3512 or stop by the library to sign up.</p>
<p><br class="spacer_" /></p>
<p><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-759" title="Carrying-Books" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Carrying-Books.png" alt="" width="162" height="204" />Kick-off for 2012&#8217;s family reading program will be Friday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.</strong> in the library community room.</p>
<p><strong>Trooper the Dog </strong>will be the guest of honor. <em><strong>&#8220;Carry-Out a Good Book&#8221;</strong></em> is the program&#8217;s theme and families may register that night.</p>
<p>Families will have a month to read as many pages as possible to earn great prizes.</p>
<p><strong>The second event of the &#8220;Carry-Out a Good Book&#8221; program will be Thursday, Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m.</strong></p>
<p>This will be a story time for families with pizza as the theme.</p>

<p><strong>Teens will meet at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17 for an activity.</strong></p>

<p><strong>Naturalists from Dallas County Conservation</strong> will give a program to preschoolers on <strong>Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 10:30 a.m.</strong></p>
<p>Through stories, activities, and hands-on artifacts, children will learn about white-tailed deer, one of the most common animals seen in Dallas County.</p>

<p><strong>Preschool activities will resume the week of Jan. 23.</strong> Preschool Story Time for ages 3-5 will be on Mondays and Toddler Times will be held on Tuesdays.  Both sessions start at 10:30 a.m.</p>

<p><strong>The last Preschool and Toddler Time sessions of 2011 will be held the week of Dec. 5 and will resume Jan. 26. </strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong> However, there will be a <strong>special story time on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 10:30 a.m</strong>. when the <strong>Dallas County Conservation</strong> will present a program entitled <strong><em>&#8220;Getting Ready for Winter.&#8221;</em></strong> Children will learn what the local wildlife is doing to get ready for winter.  There will be stories and activities.</p>

<p><strong>Andrea Juergens</strong> will hold a <strong>holiday card making workshop</strong> for school children on their early out day, <strong>Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 1:30 p.m</strong>.  Come join the fun in the library community room.</p>

<p>The library will hold a <strong>Homebrew Basics class</strong> on <strong>Thursday, Nov. 3 at 6:30 p.m.</strong> in the library community room.</p>
<p><strong>Steve Rinderknecht </strong>and<strong> Laura Hanson</strong> will share with you the basics on how to brew your own wine and beer at home.</p>
<p>There is no charge for the class.</p>

<p>Learn how to protect your personal information and how to avoid excessive exposure to direct marketing.  Online and over the phone scams will be discussed along with tips on how to avoid them.  Also, learn how to respond to situations where fraud, identity theft and other deceptive practices are suspected.</p>

<p>The <strong>ISU Extension</strong> will also present a workshop entitled <strong>&#8220;Spend Smart, Eat Smart&#8221;</strong> on <strong>Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m.</strong> Learn strategies to save money on food expenses and add new ideas into menu planning and food shopping.</p>
<p>You will also explore the Spend Smart, Eat Smart website that includes tips and strategies to reduce food expenses and how to save time and money when eating out or at home.</p>

<p>- It&#8217;s our first <strong>Tri-Fundraising Event</strong> &#8211; all sales taking place on<strong> Friday, Oct. 28</strong> from <strong>9 a.m. to 4 p.m</strong>.  The <strong>Friends of the Library Annual Bake Sale </strong>will be held in the library community room.</p>
<p>Donations of baked goods as well as Fall produce and craft items will be greatly appreciated.  Please bring items the day before the sale or from <strong>8-9 a.m.</strong> the morning of the sale.</p>
<p>Also in the community room will be a <strong>vintage book sale</strong>. An extensive collection of rare books has been given to the library and now we are offering them to you as part of our big three-part fundraiser.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-684" title="Adel Public Library Garage Sale" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Garage-Sale.gif" alt="Adel Public Library Garage Sale" width="152" height="76" />Venture to the second floor, east wing, to our monthly garage sale.  <strong>(The garage sale will also be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 29) </strong> Garage sale items are available for a free will donation.  Please remember that this is a fundraiser for the library and give accordingly.</p>
<p>The <strong>Friends of the Library will meet on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m.</strong> in the board room to make plans for the upcoming bake, book, and garage sale.  New members are always welcome.</p>
<p>- <strong>Scrapbooking: Friday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m.</strong> in the library community room.  Bring your projects and share ideas.  And don&#8217;t forget the snacks!</p>
<p>- <strong>The Brownbag Book Club</strong> will meet at noon on <strong>Thursday, Oct. 13</strong> to discuss the biography, <strong><em>&#8220;Shattered Dreams&#8221; by Irene Spencer.</em></strong></p>
<p>The <strong>Evening Book Club</strong> will meet on <strong>Thursday, Oct. 27</strong> to discuss <strong><em>&#8220;Moloka&#8217;i&#8221; by Alan Brenert</em></strong>.  As always, books for each group will be available at the front desk.  Participation in both clubs continues to grow and new members are always welcome.</p>

<p>- Are you interested in brewing your own beer or wine from home?  Join us for<strong> &#8220;Homebrew Basics.&#8221; <em> Steve Rinderknecht</em></strong> and our own <strong><em>Laura Hanson</em></strong> will share with you the basics of brewing on <strong>Thursday, Nov. 3 at 6:30 p.m.</strong></p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1130" title="Christmas Basket Silent Auction - Adel Library" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Christmas-gift1.jpg" alt="Christmas Basket Silent Auction - Adel Library" width="152" height="152" />- The Friends of the Library is planning a <strong><em>Baskets of Christmas Silent Auction</em></strong> to raise money for new books on CD. Civic groups, church groups, groups of friends, individuals, etc. please consider this project.</p>
<p>Each group or individual will prepare a themed basket for the auction, wrapped in clear plastic.  Bring the basket to the Adel Library beginning <strong>Monday, Nov. 7 through Friday, Nov. 18. </strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong>Bidders may leave their bids over a three week period, which will run from<strong> Monday, Nov. 21 through Friday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m.</strong></p>
<p>Bidders are encouraged to check back often to see if their bid has been &#8220;upped.&#8221;  This is a great way to benefit the Adel Library and get your Christmas shopping done all at the same time!  Call the library at 993-3512 if you need some theme ideas.</p>
<p>Pick up a copy of the basket guidelines at the front desk.</p>
<p><strong>And now for the kids!</strong></p>
<p>- <strong>Preschool Story Time (Mondays), Toddler Time (Tuesdays) and Preschool Music Time (Thursdays)</strong> are in full swing.  All begin at <strong>10:30 a.m.</strong> Children may wear costumes for the Oct 24 and 25 sessions.</p>

<p>Younger school age children are invited to a <strong>Halloween party on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 1:30 p.m.</strong> to coincide with ADM&#8217;s early out day.</p>

<p>J<strong>ohn Liepa, historian and Professor Emeritus at DMAAC in Des Moines </strong>will present a program entitled <strong>&#8220;How Baseball Came to Iowa&#8221; on Monday, Sept. 26</strong> in the library community room.</p>
<p>The program is free and open to the public.  Several books on baseball will be given away as door prizes.</p>
<p>His extensive baseball memorabilia collection will be on display from <strong>5 to 7 p.m.</strong></p>
<p>At <strong>7 p.m. Liepa, dressed as Iowa&#8217;s first major leaguer, Cal McVey,</strong> will give his program.</p>
<p>On display will be <strong>Iowa&#8217;s oldest known baseball card from 1867</strong>, a <strong>Babe Ruth &#8220;Rookie&#8221; card</strong>, an <strong>autographed Ruth baseball</strong>, a great photo of the October 1927 <strong>Ruth/Gehrig visit to Des Moines</strong>, baseball cards of <strong>Cy Young, Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle, Sandy Koufax, Hank Aaron </strong>and<strong> much more.</strong></p>
<p>This program is sure to be a hit with baseball fans young and old alike.</p>

<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1104" title="Adel Author Colleen Krantz" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/ColleenKrantz.jpg" alt="Adel Author Colleen Krantz" width="132" height="200" />The<strong> Evening Book Club</strong> will host Iowa author <strong>Colleen Bradford Krantz </strong>at its next meeting at the Adel Public Library on <strong>Thursday, Sept. 29.</strong> Book Club members will meet with her at 6:30 p.m. and the public is invited to hear her talk about her new book, <strong><em>&#8220;Train To Nowhere&#8221;</em></strong> at <strong>7 p.m.</strong> in the library community room.</p>
<p>&#8220;Train to Nowhere&#8221; is the story of 11 Central American and Mexican illegal immigrants who were trapped in a rail car with the promise that someone would rescue them when they were safely in the United States.  Instead, they died a horrible death and were not discovered until the train reached Denison, IA.</p>
<p>Krantz, who lives with her husband and three children in rural Adel has worked as a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Des Moines Register.  She is now an independent journalist and &#8220;Train to Nowhere&#8221; is her first book.  Krantz also co-produced the television documentary of the same name which recently debuted on IPTV.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very excited to have Colleen as our special guest speaker.  Her book is excellent and I&#8217;m sure everyone will enjoy meeting her and learning more about this story,&#8221; says Paula James, library director.</p>
<p>Only six copies of the book are available so book club members need to read the book quickly so everyone has a chance to finish it.</p>
<p>Remember, the program at 7 p.m. is for the general public.  Don&#8217;t miss this opportunity to meet a local Iowa author!</p>

<p>The library&#8217;s <strong>Brown Bag Book Club</strong> will meet at <strong>noon</strong> on <strong>Thursday, Sept. 15</strong> to discuss <strong><em>&#8220;The Book of Bright Ideas&#8221;</em> by Sandra Kring</strong>.  Bring your lunch if you wish.</p>

<p>This is in conjunction with <em><strong>Adel&#8217;s Sweet Corn Days</strong></em> and is a cool place to come if it&#8217;s a hot day and a great time to stock up on good reads for cold winter days.</p>
<p>If you are a Friends&#8217; member, the book sale is open to you on <strong>Friday, Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.</strong> Not a member?  Pay a $5 membership and you can shop at the sale.  Members are also invited to a special luncheon (free of charge) in April featuring a guest speaker.</p>

Prizes will be awarded in various categories.</p>
<p><strong>Reservations for the &#8220;American Girl Tea Party&#8221;</strong> to be held on <strong>Tuesday, Aug. 9 from 2-3 p.m</strong>. are due by Friday, Aug. 5.  The annual event will take place in the community room.  No more than 50 reservations will be accepted.  Adults as well as children need to make reservations.  Call the library at 993-3512 or stop by to make reservations.</p>
<p>The tea party has been a popular event for many years.  Children are encouraged to dress up and bring their American Girl Doll or their favorite doll or stuffed animal.  There will be activities and refreshments.</p>
<p>The library&#8217;s two book clubs will meet in August.</p>
<p>Bring your lunch and join the <strong>Brown Bag Book Club on Thursday, Aug. 11 at noon</strong>.  Just read any book you wish and share with club members.</p>
<p>The <strong>Evening Book Club</strong> will meet on <strong>Thursday, Aug. 25</strong> to discuss <em><strong>&#8220;Lazy B: Growing Upon a Cattle Ranch in the American Southwest&#8221;</strong> by Sandra Day O&#8217;Connor and H. Alan Day</em>.</p>
<p>Each club welcomes new members.  Copies of <strong><em>&#8220;Lazy B&#8221;</em></strong> will be available at the front desk.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-684" title="Adel Public Library Garage Sale" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Garage-Sale.gif" alt="Adel Public Library Garage Sale" width="152" height="76" />We&#8217;re gearing up for another library garage sale on Friday, Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  More items are added weekly so don&#8217;t miss this opportunity to find fun things.  Items are yours for a nice donation to the library.</p>
<p>The library will show a movie to school children at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31 which is an early out from school day.  The movie title will be announced at a later date.</p>

 </strong>Mondays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.<br />
 Tuesdays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.<br />

<p>If the number of hours read exceeds last year&#8217;s total, Paula and Laura will be sporting a new look at the library.</p>
<p>Come on, kids, we know you&#8217;re up for the challenge!</p>
<p><strong>Preschoolers</strong> are having fun with their own classes this summer: <strong>10:30 a.m. on Mondays</strong>, and <strong>Music Time at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays.  Toddlers are meeting on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Children grades K-5</strong> may stop by for <strong>Drop-In Crafts</strong> held each W<strong>ednesday at 10:30 a.m.</strong> while supplies last.</p>
<p><strong>The Adventurer Club</strong> meets on <strong>Wednesday afternoons at 2 p.m.</strong> with a different theme each week.</p>
<p>And the <strong>Magic Tree House Book Club</strong> will meet for the final time on <strong>Tuesday, July 19 at 2 p.m.</strong></p>
<p>A special event for kids is the <strong>Teddy Bear Sleepover on Monday, July 11 at 6 p.m.</strong></p>
<p>Children are asked to bring their Teddy Bears.  The kids won&#8217;t be staying overnight but the Teddy Bears will be.  Kids and bears will be reunited the next day with some surprises.</p>
<p>Teens are also having a great time at the library this summer reading, volunteering and attending special events.</p>
<p><strong>Teens will meet on Thursday, July 7 at 2 p.m.</strong> to talk about books they have read.</p>
<p>An <strong>&#8220;Easy Cooking: Mexican Food&#8221;</strong> class for teens will be held on <strong>Monday, July 18 at 2 p.m.</strong> Ole!</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1077" title="Harry Potter" src="http://adelpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Harry-Potter-Box-Set1.jpg" alt="Harry Potter" width="156" height="178" />And Harry Potter enthusiasts will love the <strong>Harry Potter Movie Marathon Week from July 11 to July 15.</strong></p>
<p>The entire series will be shown in order in the community room at <strong>10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday</strong> with the part one of <strong>&#8220;The Deathly Hallows&#8221;</strong> to be shown on <strong>Friday at 10 a.m.</strong></p>
<p>Teens are asked to bring their own snacks and pillows.</p>

<p>The reading program winds down in late July with all reading logs for children and teens due on Friday, July 22.</p>
<p>Teens will have their <strong>Grand Finale party at 6:30 p.m</strong>. on that day.</p>
<p>Those earning top reader status will be treated to a bowling party on Tuesday, July 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Adel Family Fun Center.</p>
<p>The <strong>Blank Park Zoo</strong> will come to the library on <strong>Wednesday, July 27 at 1:30 p.m. for the Grand Finale.</strong> All participants in the reading program are invited to attend.</p>

<li>Evening Book Club, Thursday, July 28 at 7 p.m.</li>
<li>Exercise classes continue three mornings a week at 9 a.m.  Free.  Pick up a schedule at the front desk.</li>

<p>You may also bring books for <strong>the Friends of the Library Annual Used Book Sale on Saturday, Aug. 13</strong> in conjunction with Sweet Corn Days.</p>
