Iowa’s turbulent Spring weather has already made its appearance with tornado sightings, heavy rain and hail. Meteorologist Craig Johnson will explain Iowa’s unpredictible weather at the Adel Public Library on Thursday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m. He also plans to give a presentation to children that afternoon at 4 p.m. Both programs will be in the library community room.

Johnson, a native of Fort Dodge, has been the Executive Director of the Iowa Academy of Science since 2004. He has served as a broadcast meteorologist for 30 years beginning at KUTV in Salt Lake City, then WMT in Cedar Rapids, followed by 24 years at KWWL in Waterloo, and 2 years on Good Day Iowa at FOX Television in Cedar Rapids. He enjoys speaking to schools and civic groups.

Johnson’s 4 p.m. presentation to children is called “Cloud Watching: Learning to Enjoy the Weather.” Children will learn simple cloud types and see many examples of cloud formations often seen in Iowa. There will also be a show and tell session where children will be able to touch and feel various weather instruments and learn how they work.

Johnson’s evening program is called “From Blizzards to Tornadoes: What Makes Iowa Weather Tick?” He will share with the audience his knowledge of Iowa’s quirky weather from severe winter weather to violent tornadoes – all this and yet Iowa’s weather provides an ideal agricultural climate.

This is the eighth in a series of adult programs.

Plan to come to our ninth and final program of the season – the annual “Open Mic Night at the Library” on Friday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. Last year’s Mic Night included vocal soloists, instrumental groups, poetry and other readings, a piano solo, and more. Call Lynne, master of ceremonies to schedule your talent. This isn’t a competition – just a lot of fun. And we need an audience, too! There will be prizes given throughout the evening, and even if you’re an audience member you could win. Mark your calendar!
