    aplf1Friends of the Adel Public Library will hold its annual meeting on Monday, May 11 at 7 p.m. in the library community room.  New officers will be elected and plans will be made for the used book sale to be held during Sweet Corn Days in August.  Anyone wishing to join this library support group is invited to attend.

    gsaleCheck out our monthly garage sales on the last Friday and Saturday of each month.  May’s sale will be Friday, May 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. until noon.  All items from last season are gone with new and gently used items having replaced them thanks to our loyal patrons.  Come see what is for sale for a free will donation.  Proceeds go for library projects.

    Other May activities for adults:

    Scrapbooking – Friday, May 1 at 6 p.m.
    Mommy Book Club – Wednesday, May 6 at 10 a.m.  Child care provided.
    Adult Wii – Friday, May 15 at 6:30 p.m.  Board games, too.  Snacks provided.
    Brown Bag Book Club – Tuesday, May 26 at noon (note date change)
    Evening Book Club – Thursday, May 28 at 7 p.m.

    Children’s activities for May include:

    Pre-School Story Time, Monday, May 4 and Thursday, May 7 at 10:30 a.m. – Last one until June 8 & 11.
    Toddler Time, Tuesday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. – Last one until June 9.
    Early Out Movie, Wednesday, May 13 at 1:30 p.m.

    Attention area business owners:

    Did you know that the library has a special section of business books – a recently updated one – located behind the main desk upstairs?  the following is a partial list of new books that might interest you:

    The library will be closed on Sunday beginning May 24.  Sunday hours, 1-4 p.m., will resume in September.  The library will be closed on Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day.

    Earth Day Activities

    Teens: Tuesday, April 21st @ 4:00 p.m.

    Transform a shoe box from junk to cool with decoupage. Just bring your own shoe box!  Grades 6 and up.

    Children: Wednesday, April 22nd @ 2:00 p.m.

    Celebrate Earth Day with the Magic School Bus: In the Rainforest movie, play an Earth Day game and help decorate the library!  Grades 5 and under.

    Due to a generous gift, the Adel Public Library will have a Silent Auction of 20 rare books beginning Monday, April 13 at 10 a.m. and ending Friday, May 1 at 5 p.m.  All books will have a minimum bid.  See the books in person at the library then make your bid.  Payment for books must be received by Tuesday, May 5, otherwise the next highest bidder will be notified.  All books are in fair to excellent condition.  Money raised will go toward library projects.     “What’s It Worth?” is the 8th in a series of adult programming set for Tuesday, April 14 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the library community room.  Kelly Daugherty of Daugherty Auction & Real Estate Services, Inc. will appraise an item for $5 or three items for $12.  Daugherty will share appraisals with the entire audience throughout the evening.  If you have items to be appraised, please be here by 7 p.m.  Spectators wishing to learn more about antiques are welcome even though they may not have anything they wish to have appraised.

    womenThe annual Friends of the Library Spring Luncheon will be held Saturday, April 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the library community room.  Guest speaker will be Wendy Zohrer whose program will be “Discover the Stories Written in Dust” concerning women during the Great Depression.  Friends’ members need to RSVP to the library by April 16.  This would be a good time to join the Friends of the Library.  Memberships are individual $5, family $10, and lifetime $50.  Friends members help with fundraising, library events, are the first to purchase books at our annual used book sale, and are treated to a luncheon each Spring.  Memberships may be purchased anytime at the library.
    The first library garage sale of 2009 will be held Friday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to noon.  No broken or chipped items, old computers, or clothing (including shoes) will be accepted.  If you have large items, please call ahead for approval.  Proceeds will go toward library projects.
    Children’s activities in April will focus on Earth Day.  Teens are invited to the library on Tuesday, April 21 at 4 p.m. and children grades K-6 are invited on Wednesday, April 22 (early out day for ADM students) at 2 p.m. for Earth Day activities.
    A Dora Family Movie Night will be held Friday, April 17 at 6:30 p.m.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
    Book Clubs will meet as follows:
    Brown Bag Book Club: Monday, April 27 at noon in board room
    Evening Book Club: Thursday, April 30 at 7 p.m. in board room
    Copies of books for both clubs may be checked out at the desk.
    Scrapbookers – don’t forget to get together with others who enjoy the same hobbie on Friday, April 3 at 6 p.m.   Bring a snack to share and your creative ideas.  New members are always welcome.
    Pre-School activities run as usual:
    Pre-School Story Hour – Mondays and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. (pick the best day for you)
    Toddler Time – Tuesdays and 10:30 a.m.
    Library Babies Lapsit – 2nd and 4th Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.
