Happy New Year, everyone! Welcome to 2009 and welcome to the Adel Public Library! The library staff has a January calendar full of activities for you to enjoy.
Adult programming picks up again on Saturday, January 10 with a Mystery Soup Luncheon at noon in the library community room. Following the free-will donation luncheon, retired Assistant Police Chief of Des Moines Jack Ness, who is also a retired private investigator, will be our guest speaker. He will share experiences from his fascinating line of work.

This is an appropriate kick-off to our Adult Winter Reading program entitled, “Get a Clue @ Your Library.” Saturday will also be the first day to sign up for the reading program.
Join our “Get a Clue” club that will run through March. Activities will include reading a variety of books (including mystery books, of course!), a Bingo game and mystery trivia questions. Weekly prize drawings will be held. Stop by the library, sign up, and receive the program guidelines.
A digital TV presentation will be held on Monday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. in the library community room. Anyone who has an analog TV and needs more information how to convert to digital should consider attending this meeting. A representative of Adel TV & Appliance will conduct the workshop. Digital TV starts on Feb. 17, 2009 nationwide.
A Family Reading Program – “Go Bananas for Books” – will have its kickoff on Friday, Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. Families will enjoy the storytime activities that are scheduled during the six-week program. Two other family times will be held in January: “Monkeying Around” – a story time – will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and a Curious George Movie Night will be held on Friday, Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m.
Pre-School Story Hour, Toddler Time, and Library Babies Lapsit start up again the week of Jan. 12 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday respectively at 10:30 a.m. Lapsit is held on the second and fourth Wednesdays; other pre-school activities are weekly.
Activities for older children include a special program entitled “Created Equal” on Monday, Jan. 19 from 3-5:30 p.m. This is a program on Martin Luther King for all school age children. Teens will have a gaming session on Friday, Jan. 16 from 3-5:30 p.m.

Brown Bag Book Club, Monday, Jan. 26 at noon. ”Slave” by Mende Nazer
Evening Book Club, Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. ”Whistling in the Dark” by Lesley Kagen
Copies of each book are available at the front desk.
One of the most popular New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight and get fit. Join Lynne and Paula three times a week at 9 a.m. in the library community room for an exercise class. Schedules for January and February are available at the front desk. The class is free.
Tax forms will be available at the library beginning in January.
